CO2 savings in numbers: rail transport vs. road transport

It is undeniable that rail freight is the most eco-friendly means of transport.

But what does it mean exactly in numbers?

Not everybody knows that Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHG) per tonne-km is on average:

In case of rail transport: 1.99 g of CO2 per tonne-km in France* (17.4 g of CO2 / tonne-km in Europe)

In case of road transport: 46.9 g of CO2 per tonne-km**

So, taking the example of one of our rail motorways from Le Boulou to Calais, due to rail transport 54 kg of CO2 is emitted compared to the road transport with 1263 kg (distance by rail is around 1300 km and 1200 km by road, average unit weight 23T).

Therefore, by transporting one trailer by rail instead of by road, we save 1209 kg of CO2!

And one train can transport up to 38 trailers and more than 48T of CO2 can be avoided!

* Source: Methodological guide CO2 information for transport services (Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy, French Government 2018 Version)

** Calculation made using the French Methodological guide using the consumption rate of Semi-trailer Truck - Miscellaneous goods/long-distance.

Nevertheless, our business produced 8,850 t of CO2 in 2020, attributable to rail hauling (50%), material, wagons, tractors, etc. Thanks to actions taken in 2020, we cut our emissions by 130 t of CO2 in comparison with 2019, which represents a 5% reduction in CO2 emissions per ITU transported!

Since 1 January 2021, the “Rail and Multimodal Freight Transport" (TFMM) division has become Rail Logistics Europe (RLE).

This brand reflects the international and multifaceted nature of our activities. This shall help us to be acknowledged as a benchmark partner in the French and European markets, in order to speed up a change in transport mode and turn rail into a sustainable and essential solution. The visual identity of the logo summarises this ambition:

- The rails are reminiscent of our core business and meet to form an arrow that is suggestive of the complementary nature of the various companies’ activities and of the forward momentum.
- Green underlines the inherently ecological nature of our activities,
- the light and bright blue represents the sea and the sky of the planet that we need to protect.

The development of rail freight in France is a major challenge of our commitment to increase decarbonisation: reducing our CO2 emissions by at least 55% by 2030 and reaching carbon neutrality by 2050. What with its scope, its territorial reach and its expertise, Rail Logistics Europe intends to play an active part in fighting global warming.

To ensure legibility and consistency, all the companies that operate in the rail logistics sector (Fret SNCF, the Captrain Network, VIIA, Forwardis and Naviland Cargo) were asked to revisit their visual identities with a view to reinforcing the values we all share.

This recognition from the customs service is a true European seal of confidence, providing our customers with the guarantee of a reliable and expert service in terms of the safety and security of goods and people.
Earning this certification was a team effort that required close cooperation between all the VIIA entities that contribute to the smooth running of a terminal and our customers’ satisfaction, particularly our operators and partners at the Calais terminal who, through their daily actions, maintain a high level of compliance with safety and security measures.
After the terminal in Le Boulou, Calais is the group’s second terminal to be awarded this certification.
